Wellbeing at Windsor Primary
At Windsor Primary School we pride ourselves on catering for the whole child and we provide students with an education that gives each child the best start to a happy, healthy and bright future. We encourage and model respect and equality, and teach our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.
The safe learning environment at Windsor Primary School includes wellbeing programs that encourage harmony within the school and its community. Our goal is to develop physically and emotionally healthy, happy, productive, and respectful students who can deal positively with life’s challenges.
Key wellbeing programs include Respectful Relationships, Berry Street and Rock and Water. Supporting these cornerstone programs, we also provide a number of additional activities, approaches and areas of learning including:
Mindfulness sessions
Evidence shows that primary-aged children who practise mindfulness are more focused and resilient. As little as five minutes of mindfulness first thing in the morning, or after lunch, helps settle students and improves concentration. Windsor Primary School students build and explore mindfulness in a number of ways including mindfulness sessions and centering exercises in class. Through our mindfulness activities, we see an increase in positive emotions, a reduction in negative emotions and stress. It helps students tune out distractions and improve attention
lunchtime activities
To support students who require structure during lunchtimes or would like to pursue an interest, we provide an number of lunchtime activities ranging from art, music, library, indoor games and outdoor sport activities.
Cybersafety education
Our school takes a safe and responsible approach towards information and communications technology. We encourage the benefits of technology while being very aware of the risks involved. We regularly discuss cyber safety with the students and take part in activities and seminars. For more detailed information on helping children stay safe online visit Australia’s eSafety Commissioner website at esafety.gov.au.
Anti-bullying
All students at Windsor Primary School have the right to feel safe from bullying behaviour which includes verbal/emotional, physical and cyber bullying. Harassment, bullying, violence and threatening behaviour in our school is unacceptable. Our focus is on effective school based prevention programs that take a whole school approach. We embed anti-bullying principles and processes in the Curriculum and we involve and support parents and the community through workshops, newsletters and conferences. We treat reports of bullying (including cyber bullying) very seriously and with clear consistent action using Restorative techniques. See documents and forms page for more detailed information.
Leadership opportunities
The student leadership program provides students with the opportunity and the skills to take on roles of responsibility in the school community. Along with the developed capacity to take on responsibility the students also further develop their sense of belonging and strengthen links with our community.
Buddy program
The school’s buddy program supports the transition into school for our Foundation (Prep) students and develops responsibility in our Year Five and Six students. Every Foundation child forms a very special friendship with their buddy who takes care of them as they begin their school experience and throughout their Foundation year. Having a buddy is one of the highlights of being a senior student in the school and the children do a wonderful job of ensuring our Foundation students are safe and happy.
Strong focus on attendance
Evidence shows that daily school attendance is important for young people to succeed in education and aids wellbeing by ensuring they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally. Students who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. At Windsor Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education, however the building blocks of a great education begin with all students coming to school each and every day. We try to encourage attendance through discussion, education and awards.
Restorative practices
Restorative practices focus on rebuilding relationships when there has been a problem. Part of the learning journey for children is to have disagreements and problems and like all schools our students experience issues in their friendships and social engagements. After an issue has been resolved we focus on rebuilding the relationship between the parties. Key elements to the restorative practices is honest communication between the parties and an ability to take responsibility for their role in the issue.
Support services
We also provide a number of support services for families including speech therapists, psychologists and translators.
